THE SCRIPTORIUM

About The Scriptorium

The golden age of the illuminated page ran roughly from the seventh century, when Insular monks on Iona and at Lindisfarne began wrapping the Gospels in knotwork and gold-toned pigment, to the fifteenth, when the Limbourg brothers painted a Duke’s year in a Book of Hours so fine it changed what painting could do. The Scriptorium exists to put that golden age — faithfully, legibly, permanently — on your own wall.

The curation

Every piece is drawn from a real, named manuscript: the Book of Kells at Trinity College Dublin, the Très Riches Heures at the Musée Condé, the Lindisfarne Gospels held by the British Library, bestiaries at the Getty, and single leaves and plates from the Morgan Library, the Walters Art Museum, and the Met Cloisters. We name the folio, the institution, and the source for every piece we sell — no anonymous stock imagery, ever.

The reproduction & quality promise

Every print is produced to order on archival cotton-rag stock with pigment inks rated for over a century, color-managed against the holding institution’s own source scan. Illuminated originals with genuine gold leaf or a tradition of gilded illumination are also offered as a Gold-Foil Premium Edition — a metallic accent print evoking the manuscript’s original luster, not a literal facsimile of hand-applied leaf.

The rights gate

We sell reproductions of public-domain works only. A piece is never listed for sale until its public-domain status and its source institution are verified; pieces still being sourced are kept off the site entirely rather than sold on a guess. Today, 36 pieces across 4 collections meet that bar.
